Summary

From the bestselling author of The House Guest comes a chilling story set deep in the woods…

With his marriage over and his career in freefall, journalist Tom decides to reconnect with his fourteen-year-old daughter, Frankie。 Desperate to spend precious time together now that they live an ocean apart, he brings her to Hollow Falls, a cabin resort deep in the woods of Maine。

From the outset there’s something a little eerie about the place—strange whispers in the trees, windchimes echoing through the forest—but when Tom meets true-crime podcasters David and Connie, he receives a chilling warning。 Hollow Falls has a gruesome history: twenty years ago this week, a double slaying shut down the resort。 The crime was never solved, and now the woods are overrun with murder-obsessed tourists looking to mark the grim anniversary。

It’s clear that there’s something deeply disturbing going on at Hollow Falls。 And as Tom’s dream trip turns into a nightmare, he and Frankie are faced with a choice: uncover the truth, or get out while they still can。

Mark has done better workThe book was simplistic and overly wordy in places I would not recommend this book to anyone as their first Mark Edwards read for very likely it would be their last and they would miss some very good reading in his other books。

ExcitingAn exciting, moving book。 I didn’t like the twins and hoping they’d have gotten caught and sent to a life of prison, but, they didn’t。 I really enjoyed all the characters, but not the brat twins。

I have read several of Mark Edwards books in the past and enjoyed them。 This one fell a little flat for me。 There were plenty of creepy characters and strange things happening。 My main objection was to the main character Tom。 Tom is Frankie's father and seemingly a good dad, so it makes no sense that he would repeatedly leave Frankie alone when he knows her life is in danger。 He then hesitates to call the police when bad things start to happen and, this was the worst offense, FALLS ASLEEP。 That I have read several of Mark Edwards books in the past and enjoyed them。 This one fell a little flat for me。 There were plenty of creepy characters and strange things happening。 My main objection was to the main character Tom。 Tom is Frankie's father and seemingly a good dad, so it makes no sense that he would repeatedly leave Frankie alone when he knows her life is in danger。 He then hesitates to call the police when bad things start to happen and, this was the worst offense, FALLS ASLEEP。 That one really got to me。 Had it not been for Tom's poor decision making I would have rated this book much higher。 。。。more

Another great one from Mark Edwards! The setting, the characters, the dark,, all come together to make for a perfectly creepy read。 Thanks to NetGalley for the privilege to read and review this book。

I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 Creepy novel about some crazy people。 It would make a great horror film。

A very different book from the previous ones。 Not as good as past books (to me anyway) but it was still an enjoyable read。

A new author for me。 This book started off well, it was tense, creepy and there was plenty going on but then around midway through (page 180 onwards) it got silly。 The characters began acting like teenagers in American horror films, their motivations didn't make sense, their behaviours didn't come across as authentic, all realism went out the window and the ending was nonsensical。 It felt like two different books mashed together。 A new author for me。 This book started off well, it was tense, creepy and there was plenty going on but then around midway through (page 180 onwards) it got silly。 The characters began acting like teenagers in American horror films, their motivations didn't make sense, their behaviours didn't come across as authentic, all realism went out the window and the ending was nonsensical。 It felt like two different books mashed together。 。。。more

I had a hard time getting through this book。 Not thriller enough, too slow, kind of boring and definitely not a page turner at all for me。 But I did finish it thus the 2 stars。

4。5 rounded upAnother pageturner from the brilliant but scary mind of Mark Edwards, and his most horroresque to date。 I'll always be there for this author's books and I'll always be there for a scary story set in a cabin in the woods, so there you have it, a match made in heaven。If you like your thrillers hyper realistic this might be a little too farfetched for your tastes, but I had lots of fun with it。 4。5 rounded upAnother pageturner from the brilliant but scary mind of Mark Edwards, and his most horroresque to date。 I'll always be there for this author's books and I'll always be there for a scary story set in a cabin in the woods, so there you have it, a match made in heaven。If you like your thrillers hyper realistic this might be a little too farfetched for your tastes, but I had lots of fun with it。 。。。more

It reeled me in slowly but surely。 I've never been to Maine or even to the States, but he painted a picture in my head of Hollow Falls right from the start。 Cabin in the woods and creepy shit going on gave me a proper 80s horror movie vibe which is right up my street。 My only negative is it was creepy, but not really frightening and sometimes it felt like it would be suitable for a kid to read at maybe 13 or 14。 Saying that he ended it really well。 Definitely 3。5 stars for me maybe a 4。。。 It reeled me in slowly but surely。 I've never been to Maine or even to the States, but he painted a picture in my head of Hollow Falls right from the start。 Cabin in the woods and creepy shit going on gave me a proper 80s horror movie vibe which is right up my street。 My only negative is it was creepy, but not really frightening and sometimes it felt like it would be suitable for a kid to read at maybe 13 or 14。 Saying that he ended it really well。 Definitely 3。5 stars for me maybe a 4。。。 。。。more

Divorcé Tom Anderson is bringing his 14 year old daughter Frankie to Maine where he rents a cabin in Hollow Falls (some much needed father-daughter time)。 No Wifi - a great start to their holiday for Frankie!! When they arrive, he meets couple David and Connie Butler and their son Ryan。 They are ‘dark tourists, who are fascinated by murders and tell Tom about a murder that took place in 1999 at the Hollows。 Connie herself is a successful podcaster and they take Tom to the site of the murder。 Des Divorcé Tom Anderson is bringing his 14 year old daughter Frankie to Maine where he rents a cabin in Hollow Falls (some much needed father-daughter time)。 No Wifi - a great start to their holiday for Frankie!! Get Ready for a Scare ! This book does go back and forth, from twenty yrs。ago to the present, but flows along smoothly。 A couple of teachers caught in a compromising situation were killed by what others thought were ritualistic murders。 However, when a man from the UK brings his daughter to the Hollows campground for a vacation in the present, people find out differently。It's a thrilling read and lots does happen to hold your interest。 Do yourself a favor and read this book。Mark Edwards is a very g Get Ready for a Scare ! I had a lot of fun reading this book! I alway enjoy this type of setting (campground / resort in the woods)。 For example, I really liked The Last Time I Lied, by Riley Sager。My only complaint (and the reason why I'm giving 3。5 stars instead of 4) is about the ending。 I feel like an element wasn't necessary。 I like plots with a lot of twists, but I prefer when these are realistic。 In this case, I thought it was a bit too much。Thanks to my GR friends who recommended it to me when I didn't achieve I had a lot of fun reading this book! -3 stars would be my rating。 It’s hard to say what was worse: the cringeworthy dialogue between the teenagers (ex: “Not trying to flex but I make good grades。”) or the repetitive, predictable and lackluster storyline。ETA: this has an average rating of 4。11 stars? Ho-ly crap。 HOW。

I am a massive fan of Mark Edwards and snapped this up on a pre order。 As usual this did not disappoint and was full of this author’s usual suspense and my favourite twists and turns! Another great thriller that keeps the pages turning and the tension coming! 。。。more

Well, this was a lot of fun!If you have a fondness for slasher pics – especially the nostalgia of those movies from the glory days of Friday the 13th et al, this should be right up your alley! It’s slice, dice, and DON’T RUN INTO THE WOODS!I liked our characters – even the petulant teens – and loved that there was a little ‘backwoods’ atmosphere to everything。Definitely an entertaining read!*ARC via Net Galley

Meh - this was ok but nothing particularly wow-worthy or outstanding…。。my wife who loves Edwards’ work thought it was 5/5 but despite keeping engaged, I just didn’t think there was anything particularly special about it。

Exciting storyI chose 5 stars because this was such a good read。 A father and daughter on holiday together。 He doesn't see her very often because he's divorced from her mother。 The place they stay is filled with the story of a murder 20 years ago。 The story moves along at a great pace。 I thoroughly enjoyed the story and would recommend it。 Exciting storyI chose 5 stars because this was such a good read。 A father and daughter on holiday together。 He doesn't see her very often because he's divorced from her mother。 The place they stay is filled with the story of a murder 20 years ago。 The story moves along at a great pace。 I thoroughly enjoyed the story and would recommend it。 。。。more

YA mystery with a smidge of paranormal。 A bit of horror。 No supernatural。 2。5 stars I had difficulties rating this book, so I mulled over it for a couple of days。 I chose this book after reading 4-5 star reviews that mentioned chills, thrills, whispery woods, and gruesome murders。 I was set to enjoy this book, but the Audible version has an underwhelming narrator, so I switched to Kindle。 I liked the isolated but atmospheric Maine woods。 But there’s no WiFi; nearest town is dilapidated; and poli YA mystery with a smidge of paranormal。 A bit of horror。 No supernatural。 2。5 stars I had difficulties rating this book, so I mulled over it for a couple of days。 I chose this book after reading 4-5 star reviews that mentioned chills, thrills, whispery woods, and gruesome murders。 I was set to enjoy this book, but the Audible version has an underwhelming narrator, so I switched to Kindle。 I liked the isolated but atmospheric Maine woods。 But there’s no WiFi; nearest town is dilapidated; and police station is ninety miles away。 POVs are journalist Tim Anderson, his teen daughter Frankie, and a third, unknown male。 This book reads and feels YA—even with distressing animal cruelty, a sexcapade, and gory murders。 Note that there are flashback chapters/sections, some undated。 If you read a lot of crime fiction, the mystery storyline isn’t hard to predict, as are the twists。 The primary characters are very good, but several secondaries are mostly cliches。 The red herrings are so-so, and I pegged the villains by elimination。 Characters are frightened, petrified, but as a reader, I know >98% of “supernatural events” are human-caused。 Plus, there are plot holes and unbelievable events。If you like endings tied-off, stop reading at the end of chapter 49。 Don’t read the epilogue。 SPOILERS BELOW: SPOILERSSPOILERS Lots of things bothered me, but I’ll keep it short。 1。 A camp guest dies because her cardiac medication went “missing。” She doesn’t go to the camp manager, who must have a landline to call a pharmacy or hospital in a larger town。 PLUS, someone can surely drive her 90 miles to a town with a pharmacy。 2。 Tom enters a burning cabin and can’t see due to thick smoke, but he breathes without distress。 Finally, after he rescues two people, he goes outside—where he begins to cough uncontrollably。 Q: Do camp cabins have very deep basements? A: Sure。 When the author needs one。 Q。 Wind is roaring and rain falling, so why is there a plane or chopper overhead? A。 If the author needs a chopper, he makes it so。 The capper was the epilogue, which presents a hanging thread/cliffhanger。 。。。more

2。5 rounded to 3 stars/5。 Frankie and her dad travel to the woods of Maine for a relaxing vacation and soon come to realize the resort town has a dark past that may not totally be remaining in the past。 Let me start by saying that I love Mark Edwards’ books。 I really wanted to like this one。 And it started out great。 But the turn it took was a risk, and to me it entered the realm of silliness rather than scariness。 There was never a point where I was scared and the atmosphere never was serious, 2。5 rounded to 3 stars/5。 Frankie and her dad travel to the woods of Maine for a relaxing vacation and soon come to realize the resort town has a dark past that may not totally be remaining in the past。 Let me start by saying that I love Mark Edwards’ books。 I really wanted to like this one。 And it started out great。 But the turn it took was a risk, and to me it entered the realm of silliness rather than scariness。 There was never a point where I was scared and the atmosphere never was serious, in my opinion。 I enjoyed the beginning of the book, and then it went south, for me。 I hate to give away too much of the plot for fear of spoiling it。 I will add that one of the points of view of the story is told from a teenager。 To me, that always puts the book in the realm of YA and I really am not a YA fan。 I think that I need to do some more research and see if there are any teenager narrators in the books that I read in the future and if there are, I should avoid them。Special thanks to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for this ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
